More than anywhere else in the scope of our small yard, I’m thinking hard about what I will plant in front of the garage wall, on the sunnier side of the future courtyard garden. This is our view when we look out our back windows, and when we bought this place, with the wraparound asphalt behind the house, it had a 2-car garage — the door spanning the building. It was hard to imagine ever being able to look out and see anything other than asphalt and garage door. Now, having looked out at white snow meeting bare white wall these past months, trying to envision a planted future, I’m very deliberately thinking about how it might look in every season. When sketching it, I began with what would be present in winter, then layered in the seasonal developments in order, and I wish I had captured it at each stage. Instead I’m sharing a sketch that contains everything at once, which of course wouldn’t happen. So here’s a rundown on the plant choices, plus how I’m envisioning the seasonal progression—
